Distribution

The Guardians of the galaxy was released on August the 1st, 2014 in the United States of America. There was a lot of high anticipation as well as expectations of the film as it was a synergy between two major media platforms. The synergy was between Walt Disney studios and Marvel studios. These two media platforms have been known to produce great quality, well known films such as Blade and Spiderman and have been dominating the media industry for many years now. Thus, there was a large hype, when it was announced that they were going to be working together to produce the film being 'Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvels first collaboration with Disney was in 2012 when they co produced the Avengers. The film was hugely successful an was even nominated for an oscar. Ever since then, the two companies have been inseperable and are they are even currently working on new films that are to be released in up to four years time.

The film was released widely across the globe and was released in countries such as the United Kingdom as well as the United States of America. It was released in 4,080 theatres  in the United States therefore meaning that it broke the record for the five year record held by G.I Joe and was the widest August release. The breakdown of venues was; 354 IMAX screens, 3,200 3D screens, 350 large format screens and D-box screens. The use of the 3D screens was  to help the film reach a larger audience who would enjoy 3D Films. However the director James Gunn claimed on his Facebook page that he was "unlike many other directors, I've been actively involved in with converting every shot to 3D" so that it wouldn't be "silly, distracting or overly show".

The film was also distributed as a 2D film, however it was massively distributed as a 3D film in cinemas and the use of the 3D effect was the main focus and selling point of the movie in cinemas.

The film is still going to be released for digital download on November the 18th, 2014 and is still scheduled for release on Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray 3D and DVD on November the 24th 2014.

Marketing

The creators of The Guardians of the Galaxy used many methods to market the film. One way they have Marketed it is with Social Media. They have made a Public Facebook Page and a Twitter Page for thier movie. This is a good way to market the film becuase Most people today are using Social Media.Another way they marketed the film is by making a Video Game for Smartphones and tablets. This is a good way to market the film becasue a lot of people today own a smartphone or a tablet. Also Marvel and Walt Disney partnered with many big comapnies to make merchandise for the film. They have made products like toys (action figures) for kids, clothes for all ages, mugs and more. They have made TV adverts and trailers that are shown on TV and some websites. This was a good way to market the film because most people own a computer and watch TV. The films target audience is Young Teenagers and Comic Fans. Most teenagers today spend a lot of their time watching TV at home and using the internet and going to sites like YouTube where popular movie adverts are often on the home page.

Guardians of the Galaxy was produced by Marvel studios and Walt Disney Motion Pictures and its release date was the 1st August 2014. However, he said that there was "something about it" that he started to see "visually" how the film would 'come together' and he had this straight forward vision if this film being very successful.  He expressed many of his feelings that the concept of the film was very hard to put together but later on he saw that this "big brash colourful but still gritty and emotional" film would actually work and now since its been released, its been a huge success. He describes the movie of being like a "movie from the past" the movies where it made people feel "the way that they feel" and that the most effective thing in the movie to to "take turns when the audience least expects it too" whether that would "through music, happening or through the scene", the twists and turns in this movie is what makes Guardians of the Galaxy very original.

Homework: The Guardian of the Galaxy.

official poster

The summary of the Guardian of the Galaxy is : A group of space criminals must work together to stop the fanatical villain Ronan the Accuser from destroying the galaxy.

It was released in summer 2014 worldwide in most if not all cinemas. The director is James Gunn and produced by Marvel and Walt Disney. Films also produced by these companies include : Captain America 1/2 , Avengers and Avengers 2 )2015) and more.
The budget was $170,000,000 (estimated) with the opening week creating $94,320,883 (USA) (1 August 2014). The film is run for 122 minutes and is scheduled to have a follow up of Guardian of the Galaxy 2. This movie is 12+ allowing the movie to target teenagers to adults as this film does involve violence which may not necessarily be suitable to younger audience. The genre of this film  is described :Action , Adventure, Sci-Fi.

The cast of the film includes- Chris Pratt , Zoe Saladana , Dave Batista , Vin Diesel , Lee Pace , Karen Gillan , Benicio Del Toro ,Michael Rooker , Glenn Close and Josh Brolin .

The technology that has been made is majorly green screen to allow scenarios to be formed easily and provide ll the visuals. This allows it to be available in all format with a parallel soundtrack to the movie.

The marketing involves:

Trailer-

Due to the worldwide provide the need for puplic awarness this is commonly done by going on large talk shows which are know to have large number of viewers:
In this video the actors emphasis the high budget 1,500$ this proves to the audience that they are very tight on schedule. Also, because the schedule by wasting any sort of time they are providing the editors to have less time which is where everything in the end is put together.
In this interview we also learn that some actors (Vin and Bradley) have not actually met each other before as the technoloogy element of the actors could not allow them to meet. This highlight how much technology and money is neede to create such a blockbuster.

The promotion of the actors talking on large shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live allows older audience to create intrest in this ,as the story is majorly focused on children due to the interview being played later at night. The reason for which this blockbuster is target so majorly on kids is because of the idea of super hearos and saving the world.

Merchandise
This shows merch for both the children to teenagers to adults. By having a large number of merchanise it incourages for people who have not seen it before to go see it. This continues to allow the 'fanbase' to grow for the next following movie.

This is an excellent example of a blockbuster in the film industry.

Homework - The Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy!!!

The film is a synergy and was produced by Marvel studios and Walt disney studio motion pictures.

The movie had a large budget and was therefore able to market it to the mass media easily. The budget was $170 million. It practically meant that they had the best opportunities to market the film.

The movie starred Chris pratt in the leading role, with other notable actors such as Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana and Dave Baptista. These actors are A listers and highlight the fact that the film had a large budget.

The film was made using a large range of technologies from simple things such as cameras to large and expensive technologies such as green screens.

Comic book
It was marketed by Marvel through the use of things such as consumer products - this consisted of things such as cosmetics to video games. They also created merchandise for the film for example t-shirts and fleece jackets. They also used the television and the internet to their advantage by making things such as their 1 hour sneak peak and two trailers. Lastly they sent their film to different cinemas around the world.

The production of the film was a synergy between two main companies being Marvel and Walt disney. They also synergised with iOS 8, Android and Windows to release their RPG game about the movie.

The film was released on the 21st of July, 2014 in Dolby theatre and was officially released worldwide on August the 1st 2014. The film came out a while ago and is still being showcased in some cinemas including Vue cinema in Westfield.

It is available as a movie online and in movie theatres and will be available as a DVD on December the 9th 2014.

The target audience are predominantly teenagers from the age of 12 years and above. The target are mainly young people, however it doesn't exclude those that may be older.

Reflection on your Experience of the Film Chain : Halloween.

As the prosumers we watched the original film allowing us to understand the whole concept of the film. This is an important film and is very iconic as it was made in the 70's  by Carpenters who was one of the first directors to break away from the traditional horrors. These traditional horrors would have been set in Eastern Europe in castles, and this was evident in films such as  Dracula. Carpenters used the idea of taking horror home to the streets of the USA. For our pre-production we watched the last section of the film which we hoped to recreate, (this can be found Here.)

We use different technology to become producers,
With this we created the pre-production by : creating a parallel scene to that of the story board that we devised earlier.  We then gathered all the equipment which we would need which were simply the semi- professional camera and tripod. With this we also collected needed props : mask , fake blood etc.
This allowed us to provide the characteristics for the actors without the need of them to have dialogue and conversation. We shot all the scenes in the basement of the college as it was the darkest location in the college and we then edited it in Final Cut Pro. It involved editing the scenes and creating a raw cut which just involved placing all the  scene in chronological order and slowly cutting and editing away all excess and unwanted sections of the scenes. In this we slowed some scenes down to add to the effect of suspense and tension.

In post production we created a poster for the film to inform the audience when the film was to be released and  to introduce the tag line so the audience can have an insight on what the film was going to be about and what genre the film was. We also created a trailer and an interview with one of the actors. We also set up a twitter page so that the audience could tweet our about film and hash tag ‘the night he came home', 'Halloween/2014'. With our film being released in october, this was useful as people were already searching the hashtag 'Halloween' and 'Halloween 2014'.

For our marketing we uploaded our trailer onto our blog so that people could easily access it and so that it can be widely marketed. We then activated our twitter account to post the picture of the poster and to add the link to our trailer. Uploading it to YouTube was very successful as people could directly and easily share the link to different media platforms such as twitter, Google plus and Facebook with just a click of a button.

We did the project outside of the film industry. This meant that we didn't get any help from external film makers outside of our group (as would be the case in a synergy) thus making us independent producers.

We mass marketed the film through using the internet and social networking sites to out advantage. In the process of marketing we created things such as posters and trailers. We used our social networking programme (being Twitter) to reach a large audience and promote our movie by using the poster, trailer etc. This was relatively successful as it meant that we could easily share our film to different audiences without having to pay a penny.

Due to our low budget and lack of materials as well as experience, we we unable to engage in a cross media convergence with another group/company, once again reiterating the fact that we were independent producers.

DISTRIBUTION
Distribution means the action of sharing a film amongst a number of recipients e.g. Cinemas.
A film distributor is a company that is responsible for the marketing of the film and a company that may set the release date to when the film is going to be made available doing.
The traditional way of distributing a film is to catalogue their film at festivals and markets.
The newer way of distribution deals is that the studio makes a licensing agreement with the distribution company and determines how many copies of the film to make; the distribution company shows the screening to potential buyers. The buyers the negotiate and liaise with distribution company and finally the copies are sent to the theatres a few days before the opening day, tickets get sold and in the end the theatre sends the copy back to the distribution company and pay due to the agreement they had.
Film festivals usually occur once a year that provide opportunities for unknown filmmakers to get their film in front of a real live audience and to have their films reviewed by professional critics and give people a chance for them to make distribution  deals with distribution companies and to get their film screened at cinemas.
A distributor may decide to release a film on one particular weekend rather than another as one weekend another film may come out, which will decrease the amount of people coming to see the film as they may want to see the other. Another reason may be that the distributer may want to release the film during the weekend of a bank holiday so that they will know that a lot of people would attend, making more profit for him/her.
Distribution is vital for the film chain as it is the process where the film can be bought by major distribution companies and can make your film well known, locally and even globally. Distribution is the transitional stage where the film has a chance of being a big hit, but many people need to be careful as to which distribution company they choose as if they cannot secure a distribution deal then your film may not be able to progress and expand.

MARKETING
Marketing is the process in which the studio promotes the film by doing market research and advertising. It makes the film at the new product development stage.  This is different to distribution as marketing promotes your film, and gives you a direction of exactly what age group and genre it is aiming for.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNKy9QOeDhI

Films are promoted to different audiences in different ways depending on the audience you are promoting it to. For example, if targeting a film for 15-18 year olds, then social media such as twitter, Facebook and MySpace are a great way to promote a movie via hash tags, links to the trailer and so on. Whereas if you were trying to promote a film targeted to families, the advertisements would be shown on newspapers and bus ads, as it allows a variety of people to be aware of the film.

EXHIBITION
Audiences get to see films on a variety of platforms such as in cinemas, on apps e.g Neflix, at youth centre on their tv e.g. Sky Box Office, on gaming platforms such as Xbox, PS4 and online. So films nowadays are very accessible as they are on different platforms which allows them to reach to a bigger audience.
The box office of a film is used to refer on the success of a film depending on how many tickets have been sold.
The money is received both to the distributer and producer due to the agreement they had between them on shares.
Cinemas make their money mostly on refreshments such as popcorn, nachos, drinks, sweets, chocolates and just overall junk food that you would normally eat whilst watching movies. Cinemas also make lots of money from the different trailers and advertisements that play before the film actually starts.
Cinemas encourage audiences to visit rather than watch films at home by showing a variety of 3D movies. Cinemas also encourage people to visit by having using convergence, by having promotional codes on cereal boxes and by having entry competitions to get discounts on films at cinemas. Cinemas can also just provide good service, by having an excellent sound system and by giving their viewers the best time at the cinema, and this will encourage people to come back.
Ancillary markets are non- theatrical markets for ‘feature films’ such as:
·         Home video
·         Internet streaming
·         Pay per view
·         Television

BFI stands fir British Film Institute and is a charity governed by Royal Charter that specialise in film distribution, exhibitions, publishing, festivals and so many more to encourage the developments of the arts of film, moving image and television across the whole of United Kingdom. The BFI is the world’s largest film archive that contains over 50,000 fiction films and approximately 625,000 television programmes.

The Film Chain

Production
The stages involved in producing a film?

  • The initial idea of the film of piece of production.
  • Next is the script writing. The idea is physically scribed on paper.
  • The casting is the step that follows. The right people are chosen.
  • The media shooting and filming is completed.
  • The pieces of filming are analysed and are edited.
  • Lastly is the distribution of the film (e.g selling it to cinemas)
The most famous film makers in America are:
Walt Disney animations
Warner bros pictures
Paramount pictures
20th Centry fox

An independent production is one in which the artist who created the production has sole control over the piece of production.

Distribution

  • Distribution is when a piece of media is broadcast to the mass media. This is evident through things such as television adverts.

  • The traditional way of distributing a film is through things known as film festivals

  • Television adverts would be a new way of distributing

  • A film festival is an organised presentation of films in one or more screening venues

  • If a film cant secure a distribution deal it will limit the success and potential of a film as it would have a lack of exposure; hence meaning, regardless of whether the film is good or not, it would not be seen.
Marketing

(1) It is the act of selling and promoting media through advertising. It is different as it sets the demographic of the audience.

(2)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4YhbpuGdwQ (The Muppets youtube trailer)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ezRFBnWBKg (The Muppets - Los Muppets - Spanish)

The difference is that the Muppets is translated in Spanish so that Non-English speaking viewers can easily relate to the film/programme without having to read subtitles.

Exhibition

Audiences can either go to cinemas to watch films live, download the film and watch it offline on things such as laptops or watch it online illegally or legally.

A box office is a place where people who want to watch a film go to purchase tickets.

The box office calculates how many people who watch the film, therefore revealing how popular a film is with people in a specific area. It can also show how  much profit a film will be getting from ticket purchases.

Cinemas make their money from both selling food and selling film tickets.

Cinemas encourage people to watch films in cinemas rather than at home by advertising effects such as 3D and HD that would otherwise be unattainable at home.

Ancillary markets are are markets that are not theatrical. These can be things such as the Television or DVD's.

Lastly...

The BFI are the British Film Institution.

They are required to fund and support British films.

They provide British films with financial help and funding to help them get exposure.

The different aspects of Film Chains. This includes the production, distribution, marketing and exhibition of a film.

Production:

1. What are the stages involving in producing a film- what do they include from the early idea to the final edit when the film is read to be sold to cinemas and promoted to the public ?
  • Development (Idea is created and the rights to content is bought {example: books}, also screen play is written and finance for the project is sorted)
  • Pre-production (Preparation are made : cast, location , sets are made etc )
  • Production ( The actual recording providing with raw footage)

  • Warner Bros.Pictures (Chair man/ CEO - Kevin Tsujihara)
  • Walt Disney Pictures (Chair man/ CEO - Bob Iger)
  • Walt Disney Animation Studios (President- Edwin Catmull)
  • 20th Century Fox  (Chair man / CEO -Jim Gianopulos)
  • Paramount Pictures (Chair man/ Ceo - Brad Grey)

  • The Studio System is arranged that each studio works with long term contract which allows films to be distributed.

4. What is independent production ?
  • A production when artists have control of all the inputs into the production.

Distribution:

  • Distribution is the communication that reaches a large audience. Example :TV , radio etc. Distributors set release dates which creates ability for the piece to be exhibited

2.Who distributes a film? is it always the same person who produces (make) the film?
  • Film distributors work with theatrical secure a written contract to the amount of gross tickets which would be allowed to be taken.

  • This is due to the preference of the audience.

7. Why is distribution essential to the film chain? What will happen to a film if it can't secure a distribution deal ?
  • It would not be seen , this means not as much profit will be able made which creates money for the company. If they don't have a distribution deal the film is likely to fail and not be seen.
